Bedfordshire Police Federation chairman Jim Mallen has extended his sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of a Merseyside police officer killed in the early hours of this morning.

PC Dave Phillips (34) was hit by a car which mounted a central reservation in Wallasey just after 2am. He was trying to stop the vehicle which had been taken from a Birkenhead estate agents an hour earlier.

A murder investigation is under way and police are examining CCTV.

“On behalf of Bedfordshire Police Federation, I would like to express my sympathies to PC Phillips’ loved ones,” says Jim, “Tragic incidents such as this illustrate the very real dangers police officers face as they carry out their duties, serving their communities.

“Just eight days ago, police officers from across the UK were in Edinburgh honouring fallen colleagues and the families they left behind so it seems particularly sad that another officer has now joined the memorial’s roll of honour.”

PC Phillips was married with two young children.

Merseyside Police Federation secretary Tony Barton has thanked colleagues from around the country for their messages of condolence and offers of help.
