The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) have launched a campaign to address the issue of appropriate sentencing in respect of offenders who are convicted of assaulting Police Officers.

As the effects of austerity continue to bite and officer numbers fall there is an emerging picture nationally of increasing levels of violent assault against officers and examples are being seen of weak sentences being imposed against offenders in some cases.

As the national representatives of rank and file officers the PFEW believes that a clear message needs to be sent out that assault against a police officer should always be regarded as an aggravated offence.

In order to demonstrate the extent of the current situation the PFEW are gathering examples of cases in which the sentencing is felt to have been overly lenient in respect of assaults against officers.

If you have any relevant examples, please forward details to Jim Mallen or Emma Carter.
