More than 100 detectives from across the country attendedtuesday’s Police Federation National detectives’ Forum (PFNdF) fringe meeting.
The session began with an explanation of how PFNDF started, what it hopes to do in the future and the success of the annual detectives’ awards. PFNDF believes all issues affecting detectives should be passed through the forum.
There was a discussion the fact that with fewer detectives, those left are now having to do more work and the forum is keen to stand up for them.
Steve White, national chairman, thanked all those present for their contribution to policing.
Sharon Stratton from the College of Policing gave a summary of the part it is playing in professionalising the role of public
protection and trying to standardise training across all forces.
As detailed in the Home Secretary’s speech earlier in the day, domestic violence, child sexual exploitation and child protection are all areas where the Home Office wants to see the police service improve the way it treats these vulnerable victims of crime.
Training is being given to joiners with all new ICIDP courses to be given a week’s training specialising in public protection. A new rape and child abuse course has been launched along with a register of specialist officers.
The college wants to use the courses and skills that detectives have already obtained to turn into a degree type qualification. It may use grandparents’ rights so it may not be a great deal of new work.

A Force for good...
the Community Cohesion team has won the second phase of Police Mutual’s Force for Good sponsorship and secured funding for Bedfordshire’s Police float at Luton Carnival.
The “Hats off to Luton” float will receive £500 after the team beat six other applications from Bedfordshire.
The latest Force for Good initiative, which took place earlier in the year, was well supported and received almost 1,4000 responses about local projects.
The scheme is funded by the Police Mutual Foundation and allocates up to £50,000 to community initiatives and good causes across the uK. These can range from sports teams and arts charity groups to neighbourhood gardens and are nominated by police officers, staff, Specials and their family members keen to improve the lives of members of the community.
The next phase of Force for Good will take place in September.
